Schools Get C+ in Promoting Better Health
A federal study of the nation's public schools found improvements in some areas that promote the health of students, although many deficits remain.
The report from the Center of Disease Control and Prevention found:
- 20% of schools still serve French fries, compared to 40% in 2001;
- 54% serve cookies and high fat baked goods, compared to 67% in 2001;
- 50% now sell bottled water;
- 33% have full-time school nurses;
- 77% have bully prevention programs;
- 66% of elementary schools have daily recess.
Most middle and high schools require sex education classes and some physical education, although daily time for exercise is rare.
