Kids who eat a Mediterranean diet, heavy on fruits, vegetables and nuts, may reap more health benefits than a healthy weight, according to a recent British study, reported in the journal Thorax. According to the researchers at the National Heart and Lung Institute in London, this diet actually may help to prevent allergy symptoms such as sneezing, itchy eyes and skin and runny nose, and also symptoms of asthma, such as wheezing.
How could this be? Nuts are rich in vitamin E, an antioxidant that helps to protect cell membranes from damage, as well as magnesium, which can boost lung power. And fruits and veggies contain vitamins that energize the immune system, help to protect the mucous membranes of the nose, throat and lungs from invaders, and reduce inflammation.
